Josh (Cookie Monster - courtesy of Henry Beaudette!) is an 11 year old kart racing driver, driving for KR-Sport.

Josh is no stranger to success, having won national championships as a Bambino, but he had some particularly memorable successes on a world stage in 2024 in the Rotax Micromax class:

Check out this switchback double overtake at the sun of the back straight in the prefinal at Sarno! This saw us move up to P2 from a P7 start and gave opportunity to stretch our legs to get to and work with teammate Ollie Spencer for a great 1:2 finish.

We showed incredible pace all week on our return to Sarno. This unfortunately didn’t translate into the end result we were working towards, largely due to the atrocious driving standards we had to endure all week.

I want to make special mention of @oliver_spencer_karting who gave us the win in the prefinal in an attempt to promote our final start position - true class and great sportsmanship after the pair of us checked out taking a convincing 1:2. 🙏

Massive thanks to the team for doing a mega job as always and @kr_sport_engines for the mega waft! 💙💜

Unfortunately this means it is unlikely we will return to the Grand Finals this year, a bitter pill to swallow knowing we have the pace to compete at the front on the best grids Rotax racing can throw at us. 😢

Defeated maybe, but definitely not out - we will come back stronger!

It’s been a strong weekend in Sarno despite the Heat 1 set back, being knocked off on lap 1! 🤬 20 places gained in Heat 2 from the back was the highlight, and leaving us confident and looking forwards to the RMC Euro Trophy this coming weekend.

Things don’t always go to plan on track - here the driver ahead makes an ambitious overtake attempt, tags the lead kart and spins into the side of me. This one cost us a chassis and badly bruised knee, but it could have been worse.

Karts typically spin to the outside, so we could have backed off and held left to take the inside line when it went wrong. What are your thoughts? What could we or the other driver have done differently to have achieved a better outcome?

This thought process is all part of the review that gets done after each session, to ensure we learn and continually improve.

When coaching on track, I like to try and help drivers find the optimal racing line - leading them to an improved laptime, but we also work on defence - here I go on the attack, helping the driver understand when to use a tighter line, then giving the place back to go again. These attack and defence sessions are great fun, but they also get us to switch on and start thinking about how we can apply these training simulations in the race, improving lap times and finish positions.

One of the things I often get asked, is “when should I go in?” This depends, and sometimes working with a kart ahead to close a gap is preferable to hitting the front and stalling without a tow.

At the point a pass is made it should ideally be economical, and not cost you too much time. Again that depends on stage of the race, where you are in the order, etc.

Here is a lap at PFI where I remain patient, knowing the driver ahead will likely close the door or try to come back at me, and as long as they’re not slowing me up, it’s ok to wait a little to ensure the pass is made cleanly, and restricts the likelihood of needing to go too defensive to retain the position.

We had a great time at PFI working with Micromax driver @fearless_speed. We looked at racing lines, technique in the kart, attack and defence.

We also worked with Ollie reviewing the onboard footage off track to ensure we were prepared for each session.

It was an added bonus that I was able to coach on track at the correct weight and with the correct kit for the class, to ensure a fair comparison when looking at the data and overall performance.

It was incredibly rewarding to see Ollie’s confidence, consistency and lap times improve across the sessions.

Thank you to @maximmotorsport_ for the opportunity, we look forward to doing more with you and Ollie in the future.

There’s a quite a laptime difference between Micromax and Minimax, but accuracy and good technique are still key to improving the time achieved.
